Description

Hemophilia is a hereditary hemorrhagic disease affecting males almost exclusively. The first data on the disease were obtained by the end of the 18th century, with the first descriptions of hemorrhagic conditions in males, which used to be secondary to trauma and last for long periods. Later on, researchers found that a deficiency of certain molecules known as clotting factors appeared to be a determinant factor in the development of this disease by interfering with normal blood clotting and giving rise to the occurrence of hemorrhages.

Individuals with hemophilia and their families are faced with this disease on an every day basis and live with it for life; in addition, only a small proportion of these individuals receive adequate treatment. Fortunately, there is an effective therapy for hemophilia patients to lead a relatively normal life, though there is yet no cure for the disease. Without treatment, profuse hemorrhages occur in hemophilic individuals, which can even be life-threatening.

The purpose of this work is to present the major characteristics of this disorder as well as the currently available therapeutic options.
